Advancing environmental justice in Philadelphia

Solution
Environmental Justice Tool Discovery
Real change starts with real data. To tackle environmental justice head-on, the city of Philadelphia needed a clear, actionable framework to gather, assess, and prioritize information. Future investments made to advance environmental justice can’t be driven by guesswork. They need to be driven by equity and insight, two things the city was excited to achieve by partnering with us.
Verdanity helped drive the early discovery and design strategy for a citywide Environmental Justice (EJ) Mapping Tool, partnering with stakeholders from the City of Philadelphia and Drexel’s Academy of Natural Sciences.
We helped Philly bring clarity to their environmental justice needs by:
Facilitating cross-departmental user interviews and workshops to define use cases
Mapping the data and decision-making requirements tied to environmental equity
Analyzing how different factors—air quality, green space access, economic vulnerability, and more—should be weighed and visualized
This discovery project gave the city a strong, community-informed starting point. By surfacing the right questions early, Verdanity helped shape a more equitable approach to environmental planning, one that can scale alongside future investments.
